Experience

My professional experience includes Assistant Engineering in the A1GP and Le Mans Series and Chief Data Engineer in the GP Masters Series.

Superleague Formula

Working for Alan Docking Racing and Delta Motorsport as Race Engineer Consultant for the Corinthians FC Superleague entry. This encompassed usual Race Engineer duties including running the car and managing mechanics, setup and development of car with driver at the event, Race Strategy, Tyre management and Qualifying. The car utilised the Pi Research Delta logging system with telemetry,

A1GP Series

My role in the A1GP Series was technically a Data Engineer role, however this included far more than just regular Data Engineer tasks. Before a race meeting I would perform simulations for various setups, then whilst at circuit I would track all vehicle changes documenting them for the future. This would include tyres, fuel loads, setup changes, strategy, driver comments and more. This was on top of managing the on-board data system, analysing the data and providing assistance to the Race Engineer.

Chamberlain-Synergy Motorsport - Le Mans Series, Le Mans 24h and Group C

I was Assistant Engineer to Dave Lampitt for Chamberlain-Synergy Motorsport in the LMS Championship and Le Mans 24h. In this role my responsibilities include ensuring the Race Engineer was supplied with the correct information in order to make key decisions at the factory and circuit. This responsibility extended to supporting Dave on the pit wall during the endurance races. I took responsibility for all the IT equipment (comprising hardware, software and networking), telemetry and pit to car radios. In this role I have developed interactive setup and run sheets using Excel and the powers of VBA. Often the role also required data engineering and analysis tasks, simulation work and anything else that requires technical knowledge of engineering and or computers.

Much of the work performed was in close liaison with LOLA and AER, the chassis and engine suppliers respectively. I have learned a great deal from both manufacturers as technical representatives have been present from both companies at every test session, LMS round and Le Mans 24h. In the 2006 season the team finished third in class and in the previous year (2005) competing in the LMP2 category, the team took the team title.

We also ran cars in the Group C Racing and FIA-GTC Historic series. For this I Engineered the cars at the circuit and helped develop the cars with electronic systems relevant to the era to assist with engine parameter monitoring and driver training.

Grand Prix Masters

I have worked for GPM on a full-time and contractual basis. During the build of the 15 cars I took responsibility for all cars' onboard data logging systems, sensors and general onboard electrical systems during full-time employment. This was in the early days of the series and I was tasked with setting up the initial IT infrastructure. This included configuring the servers, laptops and networks for the series at the circuits. I developed interactive setup and run sheets that allowed all engineers to view the setup information for all other cars as well as session setup changes in real time remotely across the network, reflecting the series ethos of an open data structure. All onboard data from each car was made available across the network in order to allow each engineer to analyse the data from each driver. Whilst at the circuits for the development, test sessions and races I performed data acquisition and analysis tasks for the engineers.

After ending full-time employment I continued to consult to GPM at each of the test sessions and races as the chief data engineer. This meant that I managed other data engineers and provided support to the race engineers for the data systems as well as supporting the setup and run sheets that I had developed for the series.
